Do you remember the old movie, Field of Dreams? The message in the movie was, “If you build it, they will come!”
The character’s dream, played by Kevin Costner, was to build a baseball field in the middle of a corn field. I thought it was a great movie and it has resonated with me for a long time. In fact, much of my work as a Coach is to help others identify, embrace, and create their real life dreams. To do so an individual or team (insert company here) must have clarity, confidence, competence, craft, and conditions that are prime for the achievement of the dreams.
A major part of having clarity is discussed in the this video and I have broken it down in 3 parts for you:
- Define in detail where you are in your business and the current results you are achieving. Do so with such detail that you can describe the feelings, thoughts, and what you observe from your current results. This step takes total honesty with yourself.
- Next, use your imagination and describe to yourself, on paper, in present tense (this is important) your results “as if” you have already achieved them. Example would be statements like, “I have made $100,000 by selling X to X number of people”. Give as much detail as you can to this future result you desire to accomplish.
- Take action. This is described as creating a strategy that will help you move towards your goals and dreams day by day. The worst thing you could do is dream of all the results you want but never take a single action towards your dreams. One step better than just taking action would be to take massive and inspired action. This is sure to deliver you in perfect order, with all of the results just as you desire them, to your future self.
When my clients and I are in this phase of coaching we often joke about the current results as “Reality Island” and the future results as “WOOHOOing Island” and as we build the actions and strategies to get their we view the vehicle to deliver us there as our “boat”.
